You must be Number 1 – SEO Myths Debunked

A common SEO myth is that to start earning money from your website, you have to be high up in the searches.  Do you have to be in the number one spot in the organic rankings to start getting any benefit from an SEO campaign? The answer is…no you do not!

Ian: SEO myths debunked. Today’s is ‘you must be number 1’. Andrew do you have to be number one?

Andrew: No, of course you don’t have to be number one!

Ian: Right, that’s it! Can you briefly explain why not? Because I want to try this wine.

Andrew: Is that what it is? Today’s myth is talking about having to be number one in order to get a return on your investment. Well that’s absolute BS. We’ve had so many clients we’ve done work for and a lot of their keywords are still not even on the front page but they keep telling us they’re getting calls, emails and enquiries through their website which they never did before, and obviously the goal for them is to turn those enquiries into sales.

Ian: That’s right, and it’s really about the community of keywords that you’ve got isn’t it, that’s probably not the right expression. But it’s a bit of a concert you’ve got going and I suppose the problem is that a lot the SEO deals have been thrown at people in emails and other exotic ways as we’ve been saying. They promise this number 1 position and they sell people on that, and yes if you’re number one for a particular keyword. For instance if you’re in first position you’ve got 33% of the clicks, however that’s not the be all and end all. You’ve got a whole lot of keywords that are working for you and as long as you’re getting the targeted traffic and those numbers are going up, and you’re getting enquiries, then you can turn them into sales.

Andrew: Yeah, we’ve had clients who have told us just to focus on these 10 keywords, we’ve been telling them that’s the wrong way to look at it. Sure, you need a core set of keywords that you really want to be known for, that’s fine but to target those 10 keywords alone is a big mistake. As the months go on, the number of keywords that a site is being found for should actually grow and we’re talking about relevant keywords. We’re not talking about a jewelry shop getting enquiries about how to use Word for example, that’s totally irrelevant. That’s the whole thing, your number of keywords should grow as your traffic grows, and hopefully your ROI grows as well.

Ian: Eventually you’ll get on the first page for the keywords that you really want to target, traffic you really want to get and that’s sort of the icing on the cake if you like. It’s not the be all and end all.

Andrew: Well getting on the first page or even to number one is desirable obviously and it’s still a goal but as I said to somebody today, SEO is like life: It’s a journey, not a destination. Yeah, I thought that was really good!
